The Waitangi Day fire may be a fading memory for some, but this Horotane Valley family won't be forgetting it any time soon. Look how close it came to reaching their house.

A close call for this Horotane Valley familyThe Caddie family had the closest shave of us all. Luckily they had just watered the rear of their section and Mr Caddie was there to hold the flames back with his hosepipe! Apparently he wasn't too worried at this point as he could see a helicopter with its monsoon bucket was on its way. One drop made a big difference in bringing the fire's advance under control.

The damage was limited to hedges and trees, with a fence being the main cost. Mrs Caddie was out for golf on the day and didn't get back until 6.30pm. She was glad she hadn't left any washing on the line as that would have gone up too!
