This group, initially comprising Mary Owen, Betty Glanville, Gwenda Marshall, and the late Judy Campbell and Betty Trethewey, started up in 1989. They still have the little notebook showing their first $25 donation to the church for the use of the hall!

It was lovely to visit and watch them at their work, seated around a large central table, each woman making something beautiful and unique. The range of colours and designs was enormous: there were floral patterns, geometric designs and even a quilt that told the story of a young woman’s life.

Besides the quilts themselves, I was fascinated by the variety of sewing boxes, from a tiny leather school case to old chocolate boxes and lidded baskets, all filled with needles and silks and beautifully embroidered pin cushions. It is amazing what treasures are being produced in that old village hall.

Some of their work is donated to the Womens’ Refuge and St John Ambulance Association. The group meets every Tuesday from 10 am to midday. New members are very welcome and the cost is only 50 cents a week.
